Easy Outdoor Painting Projects

August 14, 2025

With the Labor Day weekend soon upon us, why not give your space a little spruce? With the weather on your side, these done-in-a-day projects will yield benefits for years to come. And, if purchased during DIY Days next week, you’ll save 10% on Farrow & Ball paints and primers for your work!

Projects: Garden gates or doors, a bench, shutters, sheds and more!

Materials required: Wood or Metal primers, Exterior Eggshell or Full Gloss paints

Method: Prep and clean your surfaces first. Then give your bare or previously painted exterior wood or metal surfaces a coat of primer and follow that up with two color coats in Exterior Eggshell.

DIY Tips:

  • Clean/wash the surface with a damp cloth before you begin. Sand off any flaking paint and remove all dirt. Prep is everything to outcome!
  • Thoroughly mix paint before and during painting.
  • For an extra smooth finish, lightly sand between coats, especially before you begin your final coat.
  • Use the appropriate shade of Farrow & Ball primer to promote the exact F&B color that you love.
  • Don’t ignore the re-coat window; wait four hours between coats.
  • Keep a “wet edge.” If painting a large area, paint small sections at a time to be sure your brush is meeting wet paint, to avoid unwanted brush marks.
  • While the paint will be dry to the touch within two hours, paint generally takes a couple of weeks to fully cure, so be gentle with your freshly-painted surfaces, and don’t wipe or scrub the finish for at least two weeks.
